Not only were they literal churches in history, they are indicative or the moods of Christian churches today. Revelation chapter 1-3 is a warning to all churches that claim The Name of Christ. It is both a warning and an admonisment from Christ Jesus.

Looking at the order the Apostle Paul started these Churches, and the same order of which they started occurs in the letter. These were not the only Churches at the time, yet why did Jesus only choose to speak of 7 ?

Each Church name also has a meaning, Laodecia means "Judgement" which is the time which we are in now. Notice that God doesn't give us any commendation, on the contrary he gives us a rebuke.

Early Christians were tortured and killed for their faith, nowadays in the Western society we just sit around with nothing to worry about, and nobody persecuting us.

They are astrological symbolism for the 7 eye visible "nonfixed" celestial objects; sun, moon, venus, mercury, mars, saturn, and jupiter.

Revelation is a mystical account of 1st century events, cast against the astrological happenings related to the dawn of the age of Pisces, set to a 'logos' style interpretation of Jewish scripture (Daniel). It's actually a very creative work, as long as you understand this context. Literalists have invented a cartoonish 'end-times' story by failing to accept the obvious historical context of the work.
