Better marketing for people who THINK they know something about science.
Scientology feeds their ego to let them think they are somehow more 'in' on the scientific basis of the universe, so people who normally wouldn't be religious at all end up 'investing' in the future of scientology. Once they start, they delude themselves into thinking they are on the right path and stopping or questioning that path would require that they admit they are just as gullible as every other snakeoil religion. Since they start out on the premise that they AREN'T gullible, they are harder to deprogram than if they had just joined the army or something.
