If you are scoring 74 on nine holes that would be 148 on 18 holes. Hmmm, I'd say you are doing everything wrong and take up bowling. Just kidding. You should definately consider taking lessons at a local course. With a score that high, you need to be learning the basics.

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.

You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net

Take at least one lesson or at the very least buy a book on playing golf. Swing your club head through balls at the range until they go straight. Keep your swing movements smooth and don't worry about hitting the ball hard. Swing your club head through the ball don't hit at it. It is not a hit. It is a swing. Work on your putting and chipping. The more you practice, the faster your scores will come down.

Look, its not for nothing that the touring Pro's say...."Check out your Local PGA Pro..." Even touring Pro's have their own coaches. These guys know what they are doing.
To be able to help you with a swing problem, a person would have to be watching and showing you how to fix the issues. Here on the net....all you will get are the standard answers that would help...but only if you know how to inplement them.
Please go and see your Local Pro.....worth every cent. I went from a 16 handicap to 9 handicap after 6 lessons. Just remember that was in a 7 month period.
Hope that helps.

Start practicing - hit very very short shots but make sure they all go straight, slowly lengthen them bit by bit, club by club keeping it straight...repeat more longer etc.

The worst thing in the world you can do is try to kill the ball every time you hit it - without any feel or technique they will go every direction you can imagine.

Short and in the middle is better than long and out of bounds or in the trees or rough, every day of the week!
