If you are reading from a book, take two cups of grain, one for each color of grain. Whenever you come across gold empty one grain from gold cup and one from green cup and those emptied can be counted later for the number of time the word in question came up. For each page you can form separate cluster/boxes of grain on the floor for each page. If the book is small your house is sufficient. I hope I am clear. I am very poor in math and analogies anyway.

if you have handheld PDA you can download the book then use the find feature and see how many hit you get. I believe you can now get a copy of palm reader that you can view on your computer screen if you don't have a PDA.

It would probably just be quicker to actually read the book. It sounds like you have a teacher who is pretty smart.

if you got the softcopy, yes you can count them using Words features, otherwise it's impossible without reading it.
