There can be many causes, one is a form of dermatitis resulting when the same fungus that lives on your scalp & causes dandruff gains hold in the skin in your ear.

If it doesn't go away fairly quickly, you should consider talking to a doctor. If it is fungal, and the infection proceeds further into the ear it could cause serious problems.

I had a problem with flaky skin and sores in my ears and on my eyebrows. A dermatologist diagnosed it as sebbhoriac dermatitis and prescribed a cream with ketoconozole. That worked and it made the condition go away on my eyebrows. I still have occasional ear canal problems, which I treat with athlete's foot cream. That keeps it at bay.

I have had this for over 20 years. I finally found a doctor to correctly diagnose it and gave me a cream that actually worked.

He told me it was eczema.

The cream is called Elocon.
