Stockholm Syndrome is the name for the phenomenon where a hostage starts sympathizing with his/her captor. It got its name from a bank robbery/hostage taking incident that happened in Stockholm, Sweden.

Because the first time it was noted was during a hostage incident in Stockholm. And it's been Stockholm Syndrome ever since.

My version: because somebody was superstitious or liked to stereotype others by origin and did not see anything bad in converting "the syndrome in Stockholm" to "a Stockholm syndrome".
