Personally, if some idiot were bothering or about to hurt my girlfriend, I would use whatever means necessary to stop him from doing so. In my opinion, it is the man's duty to protect his girlfriend and he won't be much of a man if he doesn't. That is not intended to sound "macho", it is just that I believe that God intended for a man to protect his Lady.
For over 30 years my late wife knew that she was safe anywhere when we were together, as did my daughter, and now my girlfriend knows that she is safe when we are anywhere together. In my own personal, humble opinion, any man who loves his Lady will do whatever is required to help and protect her.

i hate to fight rather do anything else in the world than fight but if some no brain screw up insulted MY better half yes with no regrets and nothing held back

It depends on the situation.
If she is in danger of being physically harmed, then yes.
If it's just for some stupid BS like proving how "macho" men are, or something like that, then NO, it's not worth it.
A worthwhile man is one who chooses his battles wisely and carefully.
