Pain control following surgery should never be last priority. It does depend on the surgery on what medication thought necessary to help with pain. Most hospitals have a nurse that just deals with pain so you should ask to speak with her/him

They need the patient fully alert and dont want any pains masked by meds til a diagnosis has been done, After surgery any wait for pain meds is usually to allow enough time to be sure the patient wont experience nausea which is common from anesthesia.... vomiting after sugery would only increase the pain, and can cause other problems too.

Keeping Pain medication at a minimum either before or after a procedure allows the Physician or nurse to identify potential problems which need investigation. That is basically it, to fully explain the reasons will take more explanations than I am willing to write.

because most of the time, if your in for that long, you wont even remember the pain anyway, so it doesnt matter. they drug you up too much. i was in the hospital for 2 months due to a hockey puck to the throat. so i know all about this stuff.... i hate the hospital. lol
