First, trace your ancestors back to men born 1810 - 1849. Second, look for those men in one of the Ancestry Civil War data bases - either get a free trial, or wait until Veteran's day, when they allow people to look at them for free.

(You can try thes elinks, but they may tell you that you have to subscribe to see results.)

If you find one of your ancestors in RWWC, he may have a note with his military service on the data base.

The resolved Q have a ton of links for general ancestor tracing.

The park site is probably the best... http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
If you are trying to find your ancestor so that you can enter an organization such as Sons of Confederate Veterans you might try talking to a geneologist for the organization. They may very well have resources to help you.

the National Park Service website has a list of everybody who served (at least those who they could find records for). http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

Visit the cemeteries with paper and pen in hand? Actually, the LDS Church has ALL KINDS of resources, and you don't have to be a member to avail yourself of them.
