Great question! I always wondered the same thing!! Based on some quick research I did just now, apparently Hamburg is an area in Germany where Hamburgers originated. In Germany they had a tendency to name snacks after their place of origin. It seems that this has a lot to do with the "ham" connection.

The hamburger originated in Hamburg Germany, Therebye the name Hamburger.
I'm sorry, but I don't remember the origin of the answer. I believe it was in a publication I have read in the past.

The place that came up with the idea was Hamburg Germany, so it was in the style of that city.
