He doesn't trust you anymore, and yet at the same time you "saved" him so he looks to you for reassurance. Make sure he knows you aren't going to leave him alone, that you'll come back and let your cat determine when he will let you hold him and pet him. Don't force him into it, that will just make it worse. Just give it time.

He could have gotten messed around with but I doubt it. My cat does a short version of this, usually when he figures out that I'm the one who feeds him he's okay in a few hours.

Obviously, he's upset about something. He may well have 'gotten messed around with' when he was outside. This is going to sound a bit odd, but do talk to him. Talk to him kindly as though he understands what you're saying. Explain things to him -- you love him, you're not going to take him to the vet again unless he continues acting strangely, that you won't let anyone hurt him, that he must not go outside again, that you're not upset at him -- calmly and comfortingly. Who knows how much they understand, but every once in awhile it seems like they catch more than we think. I'm really not a nut, but have had animals all my life. Sometimes, for whatever reason, it has seemed that explaining things to them is the best way to go, once any physical causes have been ruled out, of course. The vet checked for that.

Hey, my cat does the same thing, isn't it annoying fter a while? LOL just kidding, what i do with my cat is I sit on the couch and let her lay on me or next to me and she calms down. Maybe you should spend the weekend with him, and let him sleep in your room (if he wants) so he can get over this phobia that ur gonna abandon him

He's trying to feel safe again with you. He won't let you touch him because he's afraid you'll bring him to the vet again but at the same time, you also rescued him from the vet (by bringing him home). Make sense?
