You can't actually play .rar files. It is a compressed file that you must "un-compress" using the right software. Think of it like a box that you must "unwrap" with another program. Try downloading WinRAR (free) to unpack it. Also remember that .Rar files usually come in bunches so you may need several .rar files to make a full movie.

On .avi files, you can play them with Windows Media Player, Real Player or Winamp. All of these are free just search for them. You will probably also need the "divx codec". Just search for that too and you can download it - it is a small program that installs the right software to be able to play most movies in the players I noted above.

(I'm assuming here that you are using some version of Windows. If not, this probably won't be helpful.)

You don't "play" .rar files. It's a compression format like .zip. You'll need to get WinRAR to expand the files so you can get at whatever's inside.

AVI files are played through Windows Media Player, among other programs, provided you've got the right codec. That's "Coder/Decoder". It's the protocol by which visual and audio data is written to a file, and there are dozens. I recommend getting a program called "GSpot", which will analyze any video file you throw at it and tell you what codecs you need and where to get them.
