Some unanalyzed aspect of their psyche has been harmed in some way and religion has jumped in to fill the vacuum and unconsciously avoid dealing with the issue. Their wounded selves see the world as a place to attack and be attacked and they then project this outward onto a deity whom they worship. Their identity is so fragile that this new thought system becomes their lifeline and they fanatically protect it and promote it, knowing somewhere in their minds that it's made of nothing and will disappear if looked at with reason.

Well the key word here is “fanatic.”
Which means: 1. extremist: somebody who has extreme and sometimes irrational enthusiasms or beliefs, especially in religion or politics
The all have a great passion for a belief that they holdfast to no matter what the opposition. No matter what side of the spectrum they are on “fanatics” all follow the same patterns of behavior.
Just my opinion… not sure of any other way to describe it
On a more seroius note here is a link to an acidemic paper that deals with the issues of terrorism. I was very impessed by it and it is interesting if you are willing to read it:

there are two kinds of fanatics. There are the I am right you are wrong crowd and the ones who are confident in their friendship with God and who will take time to observe who you are and then maybe tell you how they got to know God as a friend and let you know where they can be reached if you want to know more.
Please do not lump us all together, while some are gung ho they still know that the path is narrow and only a few will find it. I might add that there might be some who think they found it but are reling on the testimony of one of the other fanatics who may or may not actually know of that which they speak.

1. They all believe in a mystical being who is omniscient and omnipotent, creator of all the universes and time itself.
2. They all believe this being worries, on a more-or-less constant basis, about the minutiae of human beings' lives: what they eat, what they wear, how they use sex or other bodily functions, how they use music or drink or what they think about or read about or write about or talk about.
3. They all believe they know what this creator of the universe thinks and wants and that this all-powerful and all-knowing being can get his feelings hurt.
4. They all believe they have the right to judge others.
5. They all believe they will somehow live on after they die.
6. They all believe in hell -- for the other guy.
7. They all believe the being loves them extra special.
Did I forget anything?

The reliance of idolic symbols to make people think they are Christian.
The idea that somehow Sodom and Gomorrah can be changed. They keep involving themselves in the politics of the cities, states, or countries, demanding that other citizens follow their set of rules. They do this while completely ignoring the fact that God had promised to destroy the system they are trying to change, and that they are suppose to turn their backs on the old system until God does what he promised. But, they don't, and even if they think themselves separate from the system, they can keep themselves from turning back, just as Lot's wife did.

A very very low tolerance for people who don't beleive in the same things as themselves, they think their opinion is the only one that is right, they all try to force everyone else to beleive in the same thinhs they do, and they think they are supererior to all others and have a psychotic beleif in god.

They believe that their scriptures are the literal word of God and therefore should not be questioned by anyone. This is generally tied to the belief that anyone who does question their scriptures is doomed to eternal punishment by God. A sizable portion also believes that God wants them to hasten that punishment by killing the nonbelievers.
They generally seem incapable of rational thought.

Fanaticism?
Oh, and arrogance about thinking they are the only ones that are right and disrespect of others differing beliefs.
