Ask him about something you see him doing or that he appears to be interested in. No need to try and come up with sports questions or anything - just follow your instinct and pose genuine questions.

I'm a guy and not into sports. I would talk to you about books, recent or old movies, Renaissance art, dueling (I'm a sword fighter)...

Be a genuine person.

Basically, treat people the same, despite gender. If you hear someone talking about a certain subject you know about, or are interested in, don't be afraid to politely butt in and join, most people love good conversation with a small group of people, and of course, sharing what they know :)

sports.. movies..technology.. music (big plus). usually you can start a good conversation talking about bands and a lasting conversation asking him what bands he likes instead of "do you like bands?" This will make him talk more instead of saying "yes. or no" . Hope it helps!! :)

Sports, the kinds of music they like, their hobbies, vacations they've been on, what they want to be as adults, video games, their job if they have one, cars, complain about friends and family ;-) like any of us
