I don't actually have kids (you can thank me later).
These should be done around age five or six, when the child is old enough to be attached, but young enough that they're still being formed as a person.
1. Send the kid's other parent on vacation for six months. Tell the child that the parent is dead and they'll never see him/her again. Once the kid has resumed smiling, bring the other parent back. Do it again with the other parent, but this time you'll have to be more convincing. Make them look covered in blood and give them drugs to temporarily slow down their pulse and lower their body temperature.
2. Give away the dog. Then serve roast beef for dinner and tell the kid that you killed the dog and are serving it for dinner. Make him/her eat every last bite. Repeat if necessary.
