A dissecting scope generally has 10X to 40X magnification and is useful for looking at multicellular organisms or other materials like rocks, gems, etc. The compound light microscope generally has magnification of 10X to 400X, and if you have oil immersion 1000X to 2000X. You really need 400X to see a single cell organism and if you want to study cell structure the 1000X is necessary.
