Brown recluse. A black widow bite can kill you, and while a brown recluse bite can turn very nasty if it's untreated, I don't think it kills (I'm sure there are exceptions).
If you think you have been bitten by a poisonous spider, just go to the doctor or emergency room and get checked out. Why take chances?

Black Widow Spider Bite Symptoms
The black widow spider produces a protein venom that affects the victim’s nervous system. Some people are slightly affected by the venom, but others may have a severe response. The first symptom is acute pain at the site of the bite though there may only be a minimal local reaction.
* The local pain may be followed by localized or generalized severe muscle cramps, abdominal pain, weakness, and tremor. In severe cases, nausea, vomiting, faintness, dizziness, chest pain, and respiratory difficulties may follow.
* The severity of the reaction can depend on the age and physical condition of the person bitten. Children and the elderly are more seriously affected than young adults.
* In some cases, abdominal pain may mimic such conditions as appendicitis or gallbladder problems. Chest pain may be mistaken for a heart attack.
* Blood pressure and heart rate may be elevated.
* People rarely die from a black widow's bite. Life-threatening reactions are generally seen only in small children and the elderly.

The black widow bite will leave a raised, dark colored area where the venom was injected. It's very rarely fatal - only for those who are pretty sick already - but it'll make you pretty sick, expecially that day and the next. Had a friend bit by one as a kid.
The brown recluse bite will cause an area of the skin to become necrotic (to die) around the bite. It can be a large area and may require a skin graft. Infections can also occur at the site of the bite.
Most spider bites are neither black widows nor brown recluse bites. The brown recluse is the worst of the two.

a black widow bite is not lethal. it will swell and probably turn bright red. watch to striations like little red fingers moving out word from the middle of the bite. if this happens. seek medical help. A brown recluse's venom will kill the tissue around the wound and work it's way up. It's a flesh eating venom. If bitten by one. seek medical help immediately

Black widow is a better bite. A brown recluse I think is more deadly.

My dear aunt was bitten by a brown recluse and she died. She was in poor health and it finished her. It was hiding under the leaves of her african violet and, when she plucked off a withered leave, it got her. Do not stick your hand in dark places -- under the car seat, under the couch, etc.

Well, it'll make you sick as hell for a few days but probably won't kill you. It can have lasting neurological effects. There is an antidote but it only works once, so if you think you were bitten by one you'd better get to the emergency room so they can administer it as soon as possible.
