I presume toenail. The Dr. will do a block on the toe-meaning they will give you a local freezing- the needle will hurt a bit but not for long. The dr. will then do either a full removal of the nail or do a wedge resection where they cut out a part of the nail to allow it to grow in properly. Keep it clean after. Often hot/warm salt water soaks are recommended and keeping it covered. You may want to wear sandals to keep pressure off the area for a few days. Be brave.

Are you talking about ingrown toenails?

My mom had this surgery years ago, they fixed a few of her toes so she wouldn't get anymore ingrown nails (she had a chronic problem and they were horribly infected). It hurt but she healed pretty quick and she's so much happier. Now a days it's probably even less of a big deal.

Don't worry it only hurts for about two weeks. The first week really stinks. Soak your boo-boo in a bath of epsom salt water and it will heal faster and not hurt as much. Also get some sturdy shoes that's a little too big cause you'll bump that boo-boo everyday. Get well soon.

THe doc will numb your toe, so you won't be able to feel anything while he is doing it. Afterwards, if he tries to give you motrin, ask for something stronger to have just in case. It hurt for about a day, and I needed something stronger than motrin.
I was really worried like you are, but it wasn't that bad.
