I have heard a lot lately about it not being too harmfull. Why do many governments chose to make it illegal?

Because people are afraid to look at the situation objectively. Years of conditioning have polarized the issue and taken all common sense out of the situation. Instead of realizing how much middle ground there really is on this issue, the loudest people on the issue fall into one of two categories:

1) Screw your authority! Pot should be legal! It's just a plant and it makes you feel good, so what's the problem man?

or

2) The last thing we need on this planet is more worthless druggies. If you smoke weed, you're either a lazy, dirty hippie with nothing better to do than sit around and get high, or you're an unstable nutjob who's probably going to kill someone some day.

I don't think it takes a genius to realize that neither of these points of view are good, well-rounded opinions based on an open discussion about an issue that deserves attention. The fact of the matter is that some people are perfectly capable of smoking a joint on a Friday night just like having a beer or two without any real adverse effect on themselves or on society. Other people abuse it and feel like they have to be high to do anything -- just like alcoholics try to have their first drink earlier and earlier in the day.

The facts are relatively clear as to the health effects... marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol or tobacco. While this by itself does not constitute an argument for legality, it does beg the question: "Why are two of these legal and the other one isn't? Shouldn't we be consistent in applying our laws?"

It is too hard for the government to control the growth of and the sale of it. They cannot agree on how to license legal growers, how to tax it (categorically), how much to tax, how much is too much in ones possession, who should and should not be able to buy it, smoke it and distribute it. There are also too many people who believe that if they legalize it, then the doors will open to all other illegal drugs being legalized, (rationalization).

I have a lot of things to say about this, from the idea that they don't want people to think outside the box to the private prison industry's lobbying efforts. Also, a lot of people would quit smoking cigarettes, and a lot of people would start drinking less alcohol (not saying they would stop drinking it, but that when they do, they would drink less) and these corporations are quite powerful lobbyists. Anyway, a lot of people are afraid of it, and misleading educational efforts don't help.

Also, keep in mind that people who commit felonies lose their right to vote. Our government doesn't really want voters.. the majority of eligible voters don't vote and if they started a party of their own, it would drown the two major parties.

DuPont had a huge area in that... i've got self belief they are people who invented Nylon. yet another huge concern replaced into racism. Mexicans smoked dissimilar pot, and states in the Southwest had to do away with Mexicans. So.... additionally, people did no longer know plenty approximately Marijuana. William Randolph Hearst took it upon himself to miseducate the standard public by using claiming that will enhance in crime have been without postpone co-on the subject of Marijuana utilization (reefer insanity)....

Who knows??? That **** should be legal, like beer. Then the gov't could tax the **** out of it and pay for out healthcare. No cop ever went to a 10-16 where weed was involved, vs. alcohol that is. Food for thought; preferably brownies... No, I'm not a user. But I'd like to be... I think... Now for a nice legal cigarette...

It relates to social control. They have a reason to lock up otherwise non-criminal people, which would never be supported by society at large unless things like marijuana are made illegal first.

It builds up in your system - stored in fat so maybe has longer term impairment then alcohol (which causes so much more harm to family and health than pot). It is called a gateway drug - implying that once used the user goes on to become a meth using psycho. Doesn't make much sense does it.

There's a really good book called "Reefer Madness" by Eric Schlosser. I think I spelled his name right. It's a good book to start with if you want to go indepth, and get more than peoples opinions.

Current medical research indicates marihuana is harmful to humans if inhaled on a long term basis but dopeheads would have us believe otherwise.

the U.S. did it to stop the influx of Mexicans in the 20's and 30's . it was common knowledge that pot was used for medical reasons. but the congress was of a mind that the Mexicans would go back to Mexico if they couldn't get any pot...
