This is ultimately a prediction of Jesus’ crucifixion. Nicodemus could not have understood this, but John’s readers, the audience to whom the Gospel is addressed, certainly could have.In John, being lifted up refers to one continuous action of ascent, beginning with the cross but ending at the right hand of the Father.Step 1 is Jesus’ death; step 2 is his resurrection; and step 3 is the ascension back to heaven. It is the upward swing of the “pendulum” which began with the incarnation, the descent of the Word become flesh from heaven to earth (cf. Paul in Phil 2:5-11). Jesus was raised up, on the cross. The people in the desert were told to look at the symbol of the snake and they would not be harmed by the snakes that inhabited the camp. Those who did not, died.
Those who do not believe in the cross...in the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ, also will die.

He (Jesus) must be lifted up:
1. On the cross;
2. In glory into Heaven (Ascension); and
3. By the Priest during Holy Mass (Eucharist).

While going around Edom, the Israelites tire out and speak against God and Moses. Jehovah sends poisonous serpents to punish them. Moses once again intercedes, and God instructs him to make a copper serpent and set it upon a pole so that those bitten are cured by gazing at it. The serpent foreshadows the impalement of Jesus Christ for our eternal benefit

as Jesus lifts up man...
Jesus is the (Diety) of man and must be lifted up in honor and glory.

He will get this AFTER the Lifting on the cross.

The snake was lifted up to cure the people of the consequence (asp bites) for sin.
So Jesus must rise from the dead to forgive all of sin.

Moses...desert....fiery serpents....brass snake on a pole...you look...you are healed (the way we look to Jesus)....later...Jews kept it...200 yrs later began to idolize it ....Hezekiah called it "Nuhustan"(worthless) and busted it up........have a nice day.
