This is a tough call over the internet. Sometimes the treatment of choice is to remove the source of infection. If you have a diffuse abscess, extraction is a bad idea without having antibiotics first. If it is very localized, there may not be any risk to removing the tooth. In fact, this might just be the best treatment. Remove the tooth and clean out the abscess directly. You'll have to let the oral surgeon see your tooth and an x-ray and then he/she will decide.

You might want to call first, usually we put someone with an abcess on antibiotics for at least 5 days before an extraction. Main reason is, it is difficult to get the area numb when there is a lot of infection in the area. However, a lot of oral surgeons won't care about that and will go ahead and pull the tooth so the best thing to do is call first thing in the morning and they should be able to tell you what to do. Good luck to you.

I had an abscess wisdom tooth, The dentist first gave me antibiotics but all I did was walk the floor all night. So I was sitting on his office stup the next morning. He shot me up with Novocain twice, tried to pull and had to shoot me up one more time and he pulled it. OMG what a relief. I guess these things vary from one person to another. It healed no problems.

You have to go through antibiotics first, for about a week. I'm going through it right now and getting the tooth pulled on saturday. If he just pulls it that day, the poisons in the abcess could get into your bloodstream.
Good luck!

Besides the fact the poisons may go into your blood, if you have an abscess the dentist cannot freeze it. You do not want it pulled that way.

No he cant pull it as it is abcessed and sore.He will likely give you antibotics to get the swelling down so he can pull the tooth.
