I want to dye my hair dark brown at home. Do I have to bleach it first or can I go directly brown?

You can try dyening directly to brown. You can bleach if it fails.

I'd go to a professional for it - you don't want any funny results, and going to lighter shade on colored hair is not too easy.

I'm pretty sure you need to bleach it out first bec jet black is so dark... If you dont like it, I would not just bleach it right away or try and die it another color. The black will wash out a little bit after 1-5 days...
You may want to ask a professional hair stylist, they should give you advice without making you get your hair done from them.. Just call one of the local stores up... Dye is good for your hair, but if you over die or bleach it will actually damage your hair. Bleach puts a lot of little holes in the hair shaft, which is why re-dying your hair after bleaching washes out so quickly.
Maybe a toner over the black will give it a different look in the sun? or just doing highlights?
I am not a professional, but have gone through a lot of good and bad hair days!! Hope this helps.

dye won't remove dye,if you put the brown over the black it will still be black. The only way to get the black out is to have it stripped out with color remover. That can be extremely damaging. You could always let the black grow out and start dyeing the new growth dark brown, of course it won't match, but it will blend if you stick with a dark brown. I've seen several girls to this lately. Good luck

I think you can dye it directly to brown, but I would wait at least a week or so before hand so you won't damage your hair...and hey, your hair will get lighter after a few washings. My friend dyed her hair black and at first it was awful, but then it turned into a soft black and is very beautiful so don't give up hope!

that sucks.

jet black. Woah. Why do you hate it? Maybe you haven't gotten used to it... that always happens to me.. my color happens to be green right now :D

anyways try to dye it brown. Just buy the dye.. if it doens't come out the color you want it to come out ... then dye it onces more ... usually takes two tries to get the color youwant after you've dyed it black.. but yea... if you want to wait it out wash it off... wait at least a week and dye it again. Too much dye isn't good for you hair.... then dye it brown and then wait 2 more days and dye it brown again and yea.... that should do the trick...

I used to be a hairdresser and let me tell you the only thing you should do...go to a professional hair colorist. Let them do all the work, they'll strip the color out of your hair for you. After that they'll assess how much damage is in your hair in order to color back on top of it. Do not work with bleach yourself, it is too unpredicable and you think your hair looks bad now, yikes. Do not attempt to put another color on top of color, it will not lift it to another lighter color. Even when you get the color stripped your hair will never be the same, very dry. Invest in some good conditioners. That's my best advice.

uh oh. i'd say use prell shampoo or dishwashing soap on it right away to get the excess color out but it may be too late for that. you'll either have to get it lightened (i.e. bleached) and then dye it brown, or you can go to a stylist and get a corrective color job, which'll end up looking better but costing a lot (probably around $95). good luck!

You can't lighten black dye...you're gonna have to strip the color off and put the brown on if you want it to show up.

you definetly can not dye it brown...it will not lighten it. you should get it done by a professinal because if you bleach it yourself and than dye it brown it could look green and some patches of blonde may come through...trust me it happened to me...biiiiggg mistake!

ok do no longer use bleach, break of day cleansing soap, or strip your hair. it is going to turn so gruesome you may want to circulate bald. What you're able to be able to desire to do is visit a professional salon and that they are going to repair it for you with out making use of bleach.
