You should slowly work your way up to 30 minutes a day. Doctors recommend exercising for 30 minutes at least 4 times a week. But you will only lose weight if you also eat right.

It's not THAT easy to determine how much you're going to lose. There are many, many factors involved... your age, your muscular development, running on an incline? How fast? What do you know about your metabolic rate? Do you eat junk food and drink beer, sodas, eat candies... in other words do you avoid "bad" calories and what is the caloric intake compared to how many calories you burn? How overweight are you? Do you do sit-ups and/or crunches? Do you also work out with weights? Do you have a a well balanced diet? It's all really guess work and that ain't gonna help you much.

The best you can do is have a medical check-up and have the doctor determine if your fit to lose weight (hey, ya wanna drop dead of a heart attack?). Ask to speak with a dietitian; ask the dietitian to recommend a diet to lose weight and also give you the needed stamina to work out to lose weight.

Then, join a gym with an experienced, licensed weight trainer who will teach you the proper warm-ups and stretching exercises, the proper methods of exercising with weights to prevent injuries, how to warm-down and stretch and how to keep focused so you do not lose interest. That and jogging are the best ways to lose weight. You will lose fat and gain muscle and develop tonus (tone the muscles, not just get skinny).

Drink natural fruit juices, not "drinks" or "punches" and certainly not sodas (diet or otherwise), and drink lots of water!

Doesn't that sound a little more reasonable than just running around not knowing anything and guessing?

Learn to stay in shape and fit, don't just think in terms of losing weight (heck, you lose weight every time you take off your coat and clothes and shoes).

Good luck and best wishes.

That will make you stronger so that you can go farther and farther. I don't know what the terrain is like where you live but my town is hilly (hens the name Hillsboro) and walking a mile is a good workout for your legs. The steeper the better to a certain extent. I don't know how quickly you'll lose weight but I guarantee you'll be stronger, which will enable you to do more weight losing activities. I really enjoy swimming laps. If you get tired, you can slow down without feeling like an old lady and the water keeps you from overheating. I hope that that wasn't too off topic :) Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. If you are consuming too many calories, even if you are jogging every day, you won't loose any weight.
