You gave two good clues in your queston.
The dog is small and old, and the other person is a child.
When dogs begin developing arthritis, or even bad eyesight,
they get a little defensive. They know they are not as "fast on their paws" as they used to be. And, for a small dog, being fast is about his best defense, in case something goes wrong -- and he's beginning to lose it.
And, dogs know children can move fast and suddenly! That is a real threat to a teeny dog. Age can intensify their reaction to it.
It may be time to look at his "likes and dislikes" in a new light.
And, actually rearrange his social life to meet the needs of a senior.
Explain to the little girl, and don't encourage the two any more.
My Min Pin is 8, and I'm noticing changes already.

There is a vibe that that little girl is sending off. Maybe next time try giving the little girl a treat to give the dog and then there may be a connection again.

Lol I know this is mean, but I thought it was funny when you said that they run play & bark together....honestly tho...you should let your dog know that isn't the right thing to do. When he bit her,I hope you punished him (not by hitting, but maybe by saying now and ending the walk). Good luck

Older Miniture Pinchers naturally do that, just teach him not to by using a water bottle or something, don't put him down.

What were the circumstances under which he tried to bite the girl? Was she grabbing at him, or touching his toys/food, or did he think she was being aggressive to you...? In order to correct the behavior, you need to know what prompted it.

Possibly take the dog to the park more to be around children so he doesn't do this again.
