Is there a place on your remote for picture compression? On mine it says "pic size" and we use it to adjust the screen size. Some dvd's look funny until we change it.

Am I reading your fault description correctly ? do you mean that the pic is now a small square with a border all round and line thru the pic as well ? If the the answer is yes then your probable fault is the main filter electrolytic in the power supply section . If I did not read correctly then you have a vertical fault most probably an electrolytic capacitor in the vert o/p circuit !!. Either way its a run of the mill fault for any experienced TV tech . Good luck with it !!

On a regular direct view TV, this could be what the technicians call "vertical collapse".

What does that mean?

It means a part call a capacitor is bad. Depending on the year make, and model of the TV, you may need one or more capacitors replaced.

What's a capacitor?
It's a round shaped cylinder with two legs that sits inside your TV. It's like a little bathtub for electrons. When they get leaky, they don't work right.

Do you have a widescreen 16:9 TV, or a standard 4:3 TV?

If you are using a widescreen TV, see my reply to the following question, for more info on this topic.

the vertical output is failing and will need to be replaced.Call your local shop and tell them this output needs to be changed and they should be able to tell you how much it will cost.
