1)Your dog is bored. Don't leave him out there for long periods of time. And don't leave him out there alone. This may seem dumb, but people do come and steal dogs to use to train killer dogs for dog fights.
2)Give your dog a cool spot in the yard in the shade, a kiddie pool with water in it, a sprinkler, whatever he likes.
3)Treat him with some Frosty Paws when it is hot to help him cool down.
4)When they start to dig, tell him no and give him something acceptable to do, this also goes back to not leaving your dog out in the yard alone.
Don't use chicken wire, your dog could get his paws cut up and then you will have a huge vet bill.

My dog has her favorite place to dig and lay but will got nuts with little holes EVERYWHERE when her stomach is upset - like after getting a dogie bag full of greasy meat or gets into something rich like cat food.

Each time he does it you need to reprimand him. It will work after a little bit. I wouldn't suggest the chicken wire he might try to eat it and choke. Also try getting his nails trimmed. That's the best I can do. Good Luck!

watch them and stop them every time they start digging. Or get a chain to put them on so they are limited as to where they can go while outside unless you are out there with them watching them. chicken wire would be cruel.

yes is dog is bored and try the small pool if he likes water. the other option, try filling hole with water and put head in and hold!!! if that doesn't work, try filling holes with his own poop, this works well too. I know the water thing may sound bad but it works. try lots of toys in yard too.
