Open Office is absolutely great. Opens all types of Office files(Word,Excel,Powerpoint) and is free. There are regular updates and is easy to use.

Try OpenOffice. It's free, and seems to work pretty well. If you just want to be able to read and print word Documents, Microsoft has a reader for word that will do that.
