Billy TK is correct. The other two are wrong. The first year a diesel engine was offered in a light duty truck was 1983, when Ford debuted with the 6.9L V8 diesel as an option. In 1988, displacement of this engine increased to 7.3L. In mid-year 1994, Ford introduced the 7.3L "DIT" (direct injection turbo) that was offered up until after around the first three months of 2003, when they replaced that engine with, REGRETFULLY, the 6.0L DIT. ALL these engines are Navistar engines, NOT Ford engines.

the above two are right it was the 6.9 International Diesel engine.
I think the 7.3 turbo was just a way to make the people not getting powerstrokes in 94 feel better because if you ordered a truck in 94 with a manual transmission you got the new powerstroke.
people like me with the e4od automatic just got a turbocharger.
