Dawn, you are absolutely correct on one of the spellings of tipi (teepee). Which was (is) used by many Native Americans. Shame on those who criticised you for your spelling, when they didn't do their homework so as to talk intelligently on the subject. Great question!

some tribes include the blackfoot, the cree and most if not all of the plains and west coast native americans did.
