Dogs do definitely mourn when they lose a friend. But your puppy is only 6 months old which is a little too young for a really lasting attachment to your older dog. If this puppy isn't eating by tomorrow, I'd take him to the vet. I hope he's drinking, you can't let him get dehydrated.

It is possible that your pup is in mourning, but given his young age, I'd worry more that it was a gatrointestinal disorder.

If it's not that, try giving him some sort of special tasty meal -- like boiled hamburger and rice. If his tummy is upset, that meal will be easy on it. And if he's just depressed, having something special may help to snap him out of his depression.

In the meantime, if you're able to ger a fecal sample from him (which may be hard if he hasn't eaten lately), take it to the vet and have him checked for worms and other internal parasites. They can cause his appetite to decrease.

I'm pretty sure your older dog's death did not affect your 6-month-old puppy's eating habits tremendously. Of course, you must take him to the vet immediately. Personally, my dachshund, who is now 16 months old, has once in a while gone for a period without eating her dog food, because we often give her scraps from the table, and she sometimes refuses to eat anything else. But I don't know the case with your puppy, so again please take your dog to the vet.

I would take him to the vet, better safe than sorry! I have also heard that a dog can become so attached to you that if you dropped dead or something it would stay with your body. So maybe he is sad, but still a puppy, not old enough to have made such a lasting bond with the other dog. (?) just a thought.

You did not say what your older dog died of. Was it contagious? I would take him to the vet asap. He should not be mourning that long at that age, sounds serious.

It is not normal for a 6 month old pup to refuse to eat for 2 days.

Get him to the vet ASAP!!!!

See a vet right away, even if it does turn out to be mourning, its better to err on the safe side.

he is upset because his friend died (my dog did the same thing)....have you tried giving him table scrapes? i know thats not good for dogs but it would be getting him to eat something.... it wont last too long but try and add scraps into his food and stuff like that and giving him treats... and have you thought about getting another puppy?

if I had a six month old pup that hasn't eaten in 3 days I would bring him to his vet, seriously, I would not attribute that to sadness, I would see his vet. Good Luck.
