A Benevolent Dictatorship, a true meritocracy ruled by some kind of stable oligarchy like the early Roman Republic is the best form of Government there is, the input of the people is dangerous. *very* dangerous, ordinary people cannot accept they are not as clever as the educated elite and still want a say in how things are run, this is unnaceptable. States should be run a Senate of 200 old learned men.

A benevolent dictatorship isn't that bad. Problem is, a nasty dictatorship is pretty horrible, and there are no guarantees that a dictator will be benevolent. Rome may have done fine under Marcus Aurelius, but for every Marcus Aurelius, you also have a Nero or Caligula.

Any system of government works fine, if you have the right people in charge. The real trick is to come up with a system of government that still works passably well when you have the *wrong* people in charge. That's the real genius in the U.S. system of government, with its constitutional checks and balances.

Sure, the system isn't perfect and it never will be, but it's held up pretty well in the past couple hundred years. As Winston Churchill said, "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

Rather than risk the odds of getting a bad dictator, I'll stick with the current system, thank you very much!

A Benevolent Dictatorship is an oxymoron. Freedom is the ability to participate in the decision making process on matters that affect you and your community, be it local, state or federal. Ironically, this freedom is more highly valued in areas where it is most limited, leading me to believe (from your question) that you live in a country of great democracy.

To answer your question:

Because of human nature, the "200 old learned men" would tend to make decisions and agreements that would benefit the "200 old learned men" and their families more (and at the expense of) than the "ordinary people" they rule.

Without any say in their government, the "ordinary people" will become oppressed. Oppressed people are not happy people. History shows they will and rise up to overthrow "200 old learned men" or whatever else is oppressing them. The seeds of democracy will be sown, and the Dictatorship destroyed.

Another reason Dictatorships are unpopular: They don’t last long (compared to democracies) and the dictator often ends up dead or in jail at the end of his term.

I think the word "dictator" has developed bad connotations because of some of the bad dictators the world has seen throughout history. It's not so much that the governing style is terrible - it just gets associated with madmen coming into power and using it for their own gain.

If you could be sure you'd get a benevolent dictator, it might be great. But people in positions of seemingly unlimited power don't always do what's best for their people.

At least in governments where the leaders are accountable to the people, we (the little people of the country) feel like we have some recourse if our leaders get too far out of control.

Oh, Honey, because it just doesn't happen that way. God gave us free will. Why should we let some human take that away from us? I would rather choose my leaders, good or bad, and choose how to live my life. Dictators rule with an iron hand and tend to murder anyone who disagrees with them. I like to be able to think my own thoughts and speak my mind without fear of death or some other kind of retribution.
