Mental pain is the result of a problem, disappointment, or fear. It is (or ought to be) associated with a specific event. If the event results in mental "pain," call it anguish, it is preferable to suffer the pain, therefore wrong to numb yourself to it. However, if you have more important matters to attend to, you have the freedom of shelving the anguish till a more appropriate time, provided you don't try to postpone it too long. You need to experience your emotions in order to control them.

You ask a very reflective question.
If you mean suicide - no.
If you mean alcoholic stupor - we say no, but perhaps it is a poor man's way of dealing with the pain. Prescription drugs are far more socially acceptable.
My experience, extensive, is that numbing is a very inexact process. Short of going permanenty catatonic, I'm not sure "all" the pain can be numbed. The pain is often constant, the numbing temporary.

YES IT IS very bad!! If ur talking alcohol/drugs--been there, done that, have the scars (literally)! If ur talking about "stuffing" ur feelings, that's not healthy either & is similar to medicating w/out the medi... If u don't deal w/things in a healthy way; talking about it w/someone u trust or better yet, to God (He's always there & will never tell on u), then u will have to face them later & they will probably grow over time. It's not physically healthy either, over time, if u don't deal w/it, u may start showing physical signs of "stuffing."

pain doesnt just go away...if you numb yourself to the pain and bury the issues alive, they will come back in some way. you have to face the issues, feel the pain, and work your way through it to some sort of resolution. i know...thats easier said than done sometimes. i wish you well.

Depends... If you feel enduring could humiliate yourself to your own esteem, so be numb. However, feeling some pain som and then would keep your heart soft and sympathetic towards others when they could need it

Many of us try to do this one way or another. It is understandable, but it doesn`t really work. We can`t hide from ourselves. Please try praying about whatever causes you pain. It is the best way in the long run, because only God truly understands us and can heal us. Other methods of dealing with pain usually make things worse, even though they seem to work to start with..

OOOoooh YES! At first it will seem bad, you don't care any more, but then you'll feel great! or at least feel better. But then... it will all come back to bite you! You will constantly have outbursts, episodes, or breakdowns! ( I hate those!) Soon you'll need talk about it or do something about it... maybe, get help with whatever it is. It's hard to do it, and it won't change overnight, but you still need to deal.
(I know, because I did it...)

Yes, because the longer you suppress the pain, the bigger it will grow, and grow. We need to feel the pain and get through it to move on. My mom died and I didn't cry, I drank. Ten years later, I had a nervous break-down because I had carried the pain for so long. I have learned to feel it, get through it, learn from it, and move on. Good luck to you.
