It might be asthma. My cat has asthma, and in general, surprising her, or when she runs around too much, she starts coughing.

We have the vet come out about every six months to give her a cortisone shot...Luckily, this clears up the problem right away.

What you are describing sounds like hair balls, but usually the cat will end up throwing up something. Treatment for hair balls won't hurt the cat, though, so I would try that. Get a tube of Petromalt at the pet supply store and follow the directions. If it persists, I would consult with the Vet.

could be hairballs....get some hairball remedy at walmart or go to petsmart and get some laxatone and give that to them a few times a week.

take it to a vet... it may have something stuck and getting freaked out is aggrevating it.
