It seems to me, if I believed in a god, I would be much more impressed by someone who rolled the dice billions of years ago, knowing how evolution would work and how all the miriad chances would add up to create men and women who would come to know him, rather than some god who did it all in six days and fixed and knew everything from day one.

well i dont know about other religions but christians are opposed to it because it rules out the possibility of their god existing.

they like the idea that they magically poofed ito existence with a complete sensory array (eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and fingers) and immediately had a language and definitions for everything.

its an idiotic beleif but it brignsthem warm fuzzy feeligns inside...and theyre going to attack ANYTHING that keeps the mfrom their warm fuzzy feeling.

I have taken four college Biology classes in which I learned about Evolution. All of the professors were Christians. There are many Christians who believe exactly what you just said, except for the roll of the dice part.
It's a constant subject of debate mostly because of the issue of teaching it in public school, which some people are very strongly against. Since Evolution is not proven and religion offers hope, solace, tradition, and a sense of morality, Christians choose to believe and have their children taught the Bible rather than an unproven theory.
However, many Christians do see God as creating the world through evolution. I know you're not into Christianity, but you might want to look at the first chapter -Genesis, of the Little Golden Book Bible. This is the children's Bible that I was given as a child, and which many Christians use to teach their children. It shows a different perspective of Creation through the illustrations.
I'm not trying to convert you; I just think you might find it interesting.

Ignorance. They have this idea that if Evolution is true that must mean their God isn't. Which that isn't what Evolution is about anyway. The science behind it is not about proving or disproving any deity. More BS from those that take no time in finding out what it's about. They would rather just spread the BS around and look intelligent while doing it. Well, TRY to look intelligent.

As far as I know, only certain Christians are against it. I know a few who agree with evolution, but they aren't the religious right wing, "you're going to hell" christians that seem to be the majority here.

I'm afraid to tell you that your question is completely wrong, and based on false facts. Not meaning to partronise you or anything, as this is actually a common assumption.

First things first, there is not just one theory of evolution. Creationists, in the sense of believing literrally that the world was created in six days, do not really exist in the field of science any more, and I think that this is not widely known. All christians science would either believe in Intelligent Design or Evolution. There are of course many variations, and there are many different views, one thing that is sure, it will never be known for certain the exact way the Universe was created, as that would proove (or disproove) God's existence. I think that I believe that God oversaw evolution, which explains the infinitsemally small chances involved with it.

I personally believe that God in fact invented all these scientific ideas as a means for his work, He invented and used evolution as a means for creating the earth. This is rather convenient as it neither confirms not destroys the existence of Him.

It is a real shame that there are so many uneducated Christians bringing down the name of Christianity in this way. As all Atheists will tell us, Religion cannot be exempt from criticism, the theory that the world was created in six days should not be misinterpreted as exaclty six days which causes embarassement for the Christian scientific community and Christians worldwide. To take the first two chapters of Genesis literally is a mistake, Christianity is not opposed to evolution, it is in fact seen as one of the single most important factors in supporting the existence of God. Unfortunately many Christians don't understand this, which does nothing to help anyone!

Many Christians do believe in evolution. Most Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, & Lutherans do. There's no reason God couldn't have created the universe in billions of years. There could have been billions of years of time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. And there's no way to know if God didn't create and re-create the world. There may have been races of people before Adam and Eve. He did tell Adam and Eve to "replenish" rather than "plenish" the earth.

Some Christians have a more literal interpretation of Genesis, and that's fine with me. There's really no way to know since scientists can't create a big bang in a laboratory. Having actually worked with scientists when I was younger, I know a lot of the scientific process is guessing. I've seen scientists botch agricultural expirements and just write down what they thought the results should be, rather than take the blame for blowing $50,000 of tax payers money. I've seen field workers toss a cowchip in a sample bag of grass just as a joke. The scientists, when reading thew unbelievable analysis figures, simply shrugged and wrote down the figures they wanted. I realized if this happens in agricultural research, it happens in other areas as well. Science has become the new religion of the masses, and it isn't foolproof. When ever humans are in the equation of anything..religion...science..government...there will be mistakes.

My wife is from Vietnam, and was raised Buddhist. She doesn't believe in Evolution...and that's even with being educated in a communist school system. She says she knows many people in Vietnam that don't. She didn't even believe dinosaurs actually existed until I took her to a dinosaur themed amusement park.

And no doubt there are many Muslims and Jews that don't believe in it either. Hindus believe in Evolution, but they believe in a Thiestic Evolution. Kirby Hensley who founded the Universal Life Church didn't believe in God, but he also refused to believe in evolution oddly enough. No doubt there are probably more athiests out there that don't believe in it either.

There are huge gaps in the fossil record and no way to recreate the estimated millions of years of life on this earth. For instance there's a 300 million year gap in the fossil record of plant life making the transition from the sea to land. That's a pretty big gap! Evolution will always require some degree of faith as well.

Wow, even though your fundamental beliefs and mine are diametrically opposed, I couldn't agree more.

Actually, not all Christians are opposed to evolution, as we are stereotyped to.

I won't comment on other religions' views of evolution due to inadequate knowledge, but the evidence for evolution is showing that this process was extremely ordered, in fact working against the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics and thus chance and atheism.

As we all know, some Christians take the Genesis account literally, and some take it as a VERY detailed metaphor.

But now scientists are finding that many of the recent evolutionary discoveries are matching up very well with the Biblical creation account, not in any way refuting it.

So I agree with you that I also prefer having a more personal and active God, rather than one who would just let things in the universe play out on their own.

90 % of you people answering this question are idiots in the PURE sense of the word ! That's OK though, God gives you all the freedom to believe what you want to believe. I personally am a Pentacostal Believer, and have personally seen things and signs from heaven that your little microscopic brains could never comprehend, let alone believe! The Christian who is also a scientist is closer to the mark than all the rest of you put together. But that's OK! Believe what you want! If you want to believe that you came from an ape, then you probably haven't evolved as much as you think you have ! It is true that we live in an Antichrist society, and Believers are hated for their belief in Jesus Christ. But come judgement day, you will all know for sure! Since you all sound so anti-God and anti-Jesus, know this - the mark of the Beast already exists - the military is already using it today! You're all so smart - check it out.... the Beast is the largest computer in the world, and your name and everything else about you is there...... be sure to take the mark of your Master when the time comes!

I am Christian and I believe in evolution...people thought we didn't exist, but I have a pretty good theory why the two intertwine. Morons in this world automatically think that science and God dont mix. That people who believe in science think that science will one day prove there is no God. Yet what most idiots dont get and believe me there are idiots on both sides, but what they dont get is why cant the two be related, why cant evolution be Gods plan for us, why cant evolution be God and God be evolution, people make the mistake of seperating the two when really the two co-exist...really evolution is God doing God's work. WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO GRASP!!!! I'll tell you, you have the people on one side that dont believe in God in general and plan to keep it that way so their primitive little minds think their actually being more intelligent than you by assuming science will actually prove one day there is no God. On the other side you have the very true to there solid rock beliefs of what they were taught. There is no budging their faith and any new beliefs are unnecessary because they feel why would God need to change God's opinion on life, God is God, God knows all. Unfortunately what they dont get is we are stupid humans that really have no idea just how great this God is. I may know there is one, but I certainly dont know its vast significance and magnitude so how can I make up my mind on this life and exactly who or what God is.

I do not know about other religions. I am interested in your answers to this question. Christians fear evolution because it makes their bible look false. Of course, it is false. Personally, I believe in God and I believe in evolution. How they are connected is a mystery to me, but they must be connected. Evolution can be proved while God cannot.

My 13 year old son is sitting here and he just told me that it can be proved that God exists. I asked him how, he told me because there are signs all over the earth. He has every right to his opinion. I am just so relieved that he did not mention the bible. I want him to form opinions on his own without my influence. He did good.

Okay so what if evolution really did happen? Lets just say for a sec. here. Who then created all the little cells or WHATEVER to come together to make life in the very first place? Okay so science will have an answer for that, so think what made that stuff that made the cells or whatever? So on and so on..... God did! That's how I see it, if you look at it on the evolution side.

You have a lot of faith to believe that this earth and all that's
in it happened by a big bang when dinosours turned into monkeys
and then people. How about the trees, mountains, sky, rain,
desserts, forrests, languages, and the ocean? Just happened?
Evolved from what? Something had a beginning and that's where
God comes in. He was in the beginning and He alone created
the earth, the animals, the human, the sun, moon and stars,
the languages, a body that can cry, laugh, sneeze, cough and
skin that can stretch from an infant to an adult body and on and
on. Do you also think that at your death, you just lay underground
and rot or your ashes blow in the wind?? I have a home in heaven
for my spiritual body that will last an eternity. The choice isyours.
