The decimal system of counting. Imagine writing 1billion in roman equivalent. It changed the way humans do mathematics and paved the way for computers etc. It is the single greatest invention which often is over looked.

The best invention in the world?
Has to be the Post-It Note!!!
I mean where would shopping lists, or reminders, or notes stuck on doors or desks for people be without it? And if there's a power cut, you can still use it - can't use a computer in a power cut (unless it's got batteries).
Plus all the fun you can have with them - cover someone's entire desk in carefully laid out post it notes, stick them randomly on your friend who's passed out drunk, cover someone's car with them - endless fun!

The invention that's had the most impact on humanity: The Wheel.
The invention with the greatest impact on the 20th century: Alternating Current, because without it, most of our current technology would be impractical.
The (existing) invention that will have the greatest impact on the 21st century: The Computer, because it is the tool that will allow us to invent and create the technology of the future.

Three women were having a lunch date, and they were discussing the most important and amazing invention of the 20th century.
The brunette said, "I think the smartest invention of our time is the computer. Think of all the figuring and word processing it can do with just the press of a button."
"If you ask me," replied the red-head, "it's the cruise missile. Imagine being able to follow a target wherever it goes!"
Shaking her head, the third woman - you guessed it - a blonde, said, "You're both way off base. The smartest invention of the 20th century is the thermos."
The other two ladies looked at her and said in unison, "The thermos?"
"Yup," continued the blonde. "It keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold. Now you tell me: how does it know?"
LOL :D

I do not think the computer as we know it is the best invention as it is still primative, has bugs in it, using an operatiing system that isnt easy to use for a novice, doesnt self repair etc etc.
I can not think of a best invention as the all have thier good points and bad.

The bowling ball, as it's the only thing that will be left on earth as a remnant of man in a million years. Everything else will rust away and decay into nothingness. The half-life of what bowling balls are made of is long. If I answer this in a more contemporary sense, my answer is "the scientific method".

mathematics. i know its not an invention, but how we apply the numbers, the equations we use every day, do do our work, theyre invented, created, by human beings. and without them, sorry, i cannot concieve of a wolrd with applied mathematics.
and as to the best invention-creation ever, surely its got to be MAN. a half a million years down the line, were still teh mk 1, top of the range model.
