Enough to cover things the child should reasonably be expected to purchase on his or her own.
For instance, my 9-year-old son typically takes 50 cents with him to school for milk money (unless he's having hot lunch, where it's all included). On Fridays the kids sell lollipops as a fund-raiser for the 5th-grade graduation party, and that's another 50 cents for him to take. His 15-year-old sister needs about $3 a day to buy lunch at school. (And their 18-year-old sister just started her first job, so she has her OWN debit card with her OWN automatic deposit, woo-hoo!)
Amazingly, my kids don't think it's unfair for the older kids to get more money. We've always supported them however it's appropriate for their needs at the time. The 9-year-old hasn't said "But my sister gets $3 for lunch, it's not fair that I don't!" This is partly because he's a good kid, but mostly because he's a smart kid and knows it wouldn't do him any good. :-)
On the other end of the spectrum, we gave the two youngest each a pair of $20 bills for our end-of-summer trip, and let them be responsible for their own souvenirs, treats and the like. That way they could buy whatever they wanted, as long as it was within their budget. That seemed to be a good lesson for them; they both bought really interesting souvenirs, and weren't constantly asking us to buy them things.

For the daily chores they do... such as sweeping, vaccuming, dusting, wash indoor windows, empty trashes, etc, I give $1 - $5 a day depending how much they do.
At the end of the week, I take 10 percent into each child's savings. It can be for their birthday, Christmas or even college fund.
HINT: For bad behavior, I take a dollar away. It helped them understanding how important to do chores with proper attitude. It motivates them even more when they know by the end of the week they can spend on things they want.
I may be over informed but thought it may help a bit. Wish you the best!
