A rowing machine is better, but only if you're using it properly. Both an exercise bike and a rowing machine (erg) will raise your heartrate, but an exercise bike focuses on the muscle groups in your lower body. An erg, when used correctly, gives you a full body workout.

Sitting tall, your stomach muscles should be engaged and when you rock forward, move from your hips, without letting your back slump. This means your lower back will also be working, along with your obliques. Sliding slowly up the slide, your hamstrings control your movement and with the proper drive phase, your calves will propel you off the footplate, with your quads contracting as you squeeze your knees down. The abs and lower back come in again as you swing your body back (still sitting tall!) and your arms follow, giving your forearms a workout from the grip (make sure it's still loose) and biceps from the natural pull in to the chest. If you practice proper technique, you can build your fitness level over time, increasing from 10 minutes to eventually 60! You'll get your muscular and aerobic exercises all at once.

That all being said, an exericse bike is much easier to start using. However, upper body benefits are less unless you make a conscious effort to do things like sit up nice and straight or pump your arms (which generally doesn't look that great!).

Bear in mind that caloric indicators on most machines are indicative of a general weight and fitness level and unless you can program in your personal data, this will not necessarily be an accurate indicator of a workout. The best indicator is which one makes you most tired!

Depends on what you want to achieve.
If your main purpose is to burn calories effectively you will burn more calories a minute on a rowing machine than on a bike.
However , depending on your fitness level you may not be able to sustain the rowing machine for a long time. The advantages of the rowing machine can not be overlooked as it works both the upper and lower body.
The bike is good for volume you can sustain exercise on a bike for a longer period.
To achieve weight loss you need to burn a sufficient amount of calories in your workout session. There is no point in working out at a high intensity on the rowing machine for 10 minutes and burning 100 calories and exhausted when you can work out on a bike for 30 minutes at a lower intensity and burn let say 200 calories.
If you are fit go for the rowing machine

Rowing machine does your whole body, exercise bike only your legs. A treadmill would give you a better workout or you could ride a bike for real or go on an actual run

I would say "rowing machine" as it is an exercise for the whole body. Exercise bike is good if you have heavy hips or if you want to develop your thigh muscles.

i would say rowing machine because it seems like you would get more of a workout with it unless the bike handles move back and forth

Both are good but I would go with the rowing machine.
