Im worried if I change the subjects Im doing now it will affect my whole career path. Im a black guy aged 17 years old and Im currently doing Chemistry, Biology and maths at AS level. And I was considering changing chemistry and biology to sociology and psychology.

Im worried that if I make these changes it will totally affect my life. This is because in UK you hardly see many black psychologists and im saying this in a nice way. There are a lot of "black psychologist graduates" but they cant seem to find "jobs".

What would you suggest to me what shall I do. And does anyone know how long it takes in University to become a Psychologist. Sorry if my spelling/gramma are bad Im kinda typing fast.

I suggest that you stick with the classes you are taking. They will give you the best background and best preparation for the future and whatever profession you decide upon as you get older.

You sound like an intelligent, smart person. But what you lack is experience. We all did at seventeen. I relate very strongly to your situation. At seventeen, I was certain I was going to be a chemist. I had wanted to be a chemist since I was 7. I took all the math and science classes I could. Then I got to college. I spent 3 and a half years taking chemistry classes. Then I realized that chemistry was not what I had envisioned. I realized that I was not going to be happy being a chemist. So I switched to being a geologic engineering major. . I graduated with that degree and worked for eight years before the economy went bad and there were no geology jobs at that time. I later became a computer geek and worked for IBM as an IT tech monitoring global WANs. I may not have become a chemist but the classes gave me the background knowledge I needed to switch majors and later switch careers.

The point is this:

1. Very few people graduate in the major for which they first go to college.
2. At some point in the 80's, it was estimated that due to obsolesence, most people would have 3 or even 4 different careers in their lifetime.

Those classes you are taking right now will provide you with the background knowledge you will need later to build upon and get jobs no matter what field.

Good luck!!! Sorry I can't help about the prejudice. I'll tell you what though - let's you and I start our own country where skin color, gender and other such things don't matter. Because all that should matter is that you are a good, honorable human being that is trying his or her best to live a good and virtuous life.

1: Let's suppose there was a 'first cause' - Something that started everything else off, but was itself not caused by an antecedent event. Well, if that's the case, why put a beard on it and call it 'God'? Why couldn't it just have been a mindless natural event, just like every other natural event that it was responsible for? There's no reason to personalise it and give it human emotions and desires and faults. 2: If the universe is a remarkable thing which needs something to account for its origin, then most assuredly something that can *design* and *create* a universe is infinitely *more* remarkable and infinitely more in need of something to account for its origin. Proposing an intelligent creator leaves you with an infinitely bigger problem than you started with. Hope this helps...

do whatever YOU want to do and feel most comforable doing. dont change your whole life because of what you see in society. And get over the fact that you are black and see yourself as a regular human being. Im sure that you will do great in whatever subject that you choose to study in. Do what most interests you!

I say stay with the sciences because they will give you more options for college. you can always pick up a psychology class but not always a science.

and best of luck with psychology.
