Since lcd tvs use a lamp thats life depends on proper placement ie: 4inches of venting completely around tv.This is required because heat will decrease the life of your lamp so fireplaces and heat go hand in had. With plazma or lcd the accidental soot factor could be costly to light engines and panels, its best not to put above fireplaces.

Most of these high-end electronic components would be sensitive to overheating. So, depending on how much draft from the fireplace is going towards the TV, it may make the components inside your TV overheat and eventually fail.

In general, Plasma TVs run hotter than LCD TVs. So if you don't have air at room temperature circulating properly around the plasma TV, the components might get overheated from the heat generated by the components inside the TV itself.

Look at the operating temperature range specifications from your TVs manual. If the temperature of air around the TV stays well beyond the maximum specified in the spec sheet, because of the draft from fire place (of course, during the times you operate your TV), I bet it will have a negative effect on the life or performance of your TV.

Mounting above the fireplace went out of fashion over a year ago for the following reason:

Sitting low and carning your neck upwards to watch TV creates severe neck pain!

To test this out, go to a theater that has seats which don't have head supports. Sit in the front row. See how your neck aches? This is why you are better off putting it at eye level or just slightly below.

If you must still do it, get furniture with good head support, like a pair of recliners.
