I have a friend I am very close to and she is a born-again christian and attends a bible fellowship church. I tried to go with her, but don't agree with some things. I have a one year old baby boy and I told her I had to get a Halloween costume for him and she got very upset & is coming over tomorrow to show me a movie and give me literature about Halloween. She says it is satans holiday and I am committing evil before lord. She also says no Santa Claus, just tell baby it is birthday of Jesus and no Easter Bunny, tell baby Easter is only to celebrate that Jesus has died & risen. I say these holidays are for the kiddies & I will not change my mind on this. I love Halloween, love to give out candy & see the costumes. I'll take baby to see Santa & Easter Bunny & hide eggs. Why would the folks at her church take away this joy from their kids????What is up with this???

Many Christians are against Halloween and think it celebrates the devil. But atitudes vary even in the born-again Christian community. Some celebrate in different ways, some "witness" to trick-or-treaters, etc.

That said, he's *your* kid and it's *your* life and if you think he'd look just darling in a little black kitten costume, there's nothing at all evil or anti-Christian about it. And she's being awfully pushy and invasive. Tell her you won't tell her how to raise her kids if she leaves yours alone.

Becuase don't u see what the world is doing to Christian faith? They are trying to turn every celbration that has to do with God into something esle adnnlie to the chiildren. Were not trying to hurt the children but we're trying to amek them realizet aht Santa isn't real and also Haloween is the celebration for the devil. They also use Easter to get the kids to find eatser eggs or to makes easter eggs with dye. But ppl don't realize that the world is trying to erase God from evrything or religion from everything. Why can't teh children kow that Easter is the day that Jesus was resurrected or that Christmas is th day that Jesus was bron. Or many other thing. But the world ahs been so negative with religion. Why can't someone wear a shirt that says that "Got Christ?' at school. Or have the pledge of aliigience said without any problems or have the ten commandments displayed in a building? Why do ppl hate God soo much? We're not trying to take those stupid things from them to make them cry but to let them know th real reason behing the holiday. Im surprised they didn't use Thaksgiving to find turkeys and kill them or find turkeys and getmoney for that. That is the only good holiday that hasn't been hidden with stupid celebrations.

Don't watch the movie -- it's pure propaganda.
Originally Halloween was a cross between a pagan and an early catholic holiday -- "all hallow's eve" was the night before all saints day, and was supposed to be the night the spirits of the dead came out and showed themselves. That was a thousand years ago or so.

The day lost its religious side many, many years ago, and is now completely commercial and fun. That your christian friend can't have any fun is her own problem, don't let her make it yours! Dressing up on halloween is what YOU make of it, nothing more or less. Doing so doesn't make you satanic, not doing so doesn't make you holy.

Oh, and tell your friend that jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25th, and that christmas is a conversion of a pagan winter holiday, and the reason for the christmas tree comes from bringing green life from the earth into a winter home as a plea for pagan gods to bring back spring...then ask her if she celebrates christmas on Dec. 25th and if so, if that makes her a pagan...:)

IAs a Christian, in some way I can understand where she is coming from. But the bottom line is, it is for you to decide as the child's parent. Tell her that you respect her faith and perhaps one day you may agree with it but for now she needs to respect your parental decisions and stay out of it.

We are a Christian family, my husband is a pastor and except for Halloween, (we did the Reformation Day fesitivies so the kids had a ball anyway)--we did Santa Claus, but my kids also knew it was celebrated as the birthday of Christ. We were able to impart that and still let them have fun.

As far as Halloween goes I think it is a horrible idea to teach kids to go door to door to strangers homes, knocking on the doors....in this world it is not a good idea to say one day a year it is safe but the rest of the year don't speak to strangers - it is a mixed message.

Most schools or churches have carnivals or parties for the festivities so your child can have a blast and be safe.

Some Christians feel very strongly that Halloween is a holiday that is centered around demons, satan, witches, etc. I suppose it could be. And I hope you're not dressing your baby up as the devil or something.

Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with kids dressing up on Halloween (just so it's not as witches or whatever) and going to get candy. I also have Christmas tree decorations at Christmas....so I'd probably be on your friend's list, too!

Born again christians, people that quit smoking or drinking, Amway salespeople are all the same. When my friends enter my doorway, they have passed into my Kingdome. You set the rules in your home. No drinking, No smoking, No bible crap. Done deal. Take the baby Trick or Treating. Get some nice Christmas gifts. Hide the Easter eggs. It's your life and that's how your going to raise your family. The best that YOU can. Sounds more of a pain than a friend.

Halloween, or samhain (sow-hain) is a pagan Holiday that orgininated as the last harvest of the year. It is also the time of year that the god dies to be reborn in December. Some considered it the beginning of a new year. Food and treats were set out to share the bounty with family members who were no longer of the same world. It is the time when it is said that the veil between the spirit world and the real world is the thinnest,so departed family and friends are the easiest to connect with. it was a time of merriment, and reflection of the past events, and hopes for the future. Jack'o lanterns were traditionally put out to scare away evil spirits.

So Halloween is a time of recognizing and honoring the dead, and the bounty of the earth, and to hope for good times until spring.

All in all it is your life and your child, so be open to your friends opinions, but dont let her push you around. decide for yourself.

Your friend is a jerk. Halloween, like many of our holdiays originated with the Pagans. It has NOTHING to do with Satan, or hating Jesus, or wishing to bite the heads off of chickens, or anything sinister. Santa and the Easter bunny, I can see her conflict with. If you want xmas and Easter to be about Jesus, make them about Jesus and don't confuse your kids with stories of magical flying reindeer. But Halloween has never and will never have anything to do with Christianity, or its supposed opposite, Satanism. Tell her to get over it and get a life.

Oh, and "theladylooking" is dead wrong.

Barb K is also an idiot... "ooooh, I saw it on 20/20 so it MUST be true."

I'm a born-again christian and I don't think there is anything wrong with dressing up for halloween. When I was in high school my youth group went all dressed up and handed OUT candy to the doors we knocked on, it's called reverse trick-or-treating.
As long as you don't get ALL into it like decorate your lawn with morbid scenery and try and contact the dead or something crazy like that I think it's okay to dress up and have a little fun. Just don't get into what secular society has made the holiday (witchcraft, dead people walking around) and don't instill that in your child. That's NOT what halloween is about...it's about fun!!

Because Christians are taught that Halloween is evil. It goes back to the pagan days before Christianity took over. People believed that evil spirits walked the earth on Halloween night. To pacify them (the spirits), people would put "treats" out on their door steps so that the spirit wouldn't come across the threshold. Usually the treats was wine, bread and cheese.
