"CBS/AP) The House voted Wednesday to require Americans to show proof of citizenship in order to vote, and the Senate moved to build a 700-mile fence along the Mexican border as Republicans sharpened attacks on illegal immigration before the midterm elections.

The 228-196 House vote on a new photo ID plan and the Senate's consideration of the fence were both part of a get-tough policy on illegal immigrants that Republicans have embraced after Congress' failure to agree on broader legislation that would set a path for undocumented workers to attain citizenship.

House GOP leaders have insisted that tighter borders and tougher laws must precede more comprehensive immigration changes. "

The Senate has only 'moved to consider' the fence, but a lot are saying that while this might be just a first step to a comprehensive plan, the would go for the fence. We'll see, I guess!

What do you think?

Katsulov - yeah, I noticed it wasn't funded and that only a billion or a billion and a half was expected to be funded by the elections. I think they are saying 'if we don't win, you may never get the full fence', but maybe that is just my devious mind.

oh, hadenough, you just HAD to say that, didn't you?

I had the nagging thought but figured we'd cross that bridge when we came to it...

I saw that and am encouraged. I faxed and called my senators to tell them to vote for the fence. I think we need one on the northern border too, but the 700 mile one on the southern one makes sense. We also need to make sure we have enough detection equipment around the fence to stop them from putting a hole in it or simply digging under it.

Proof of citizenship to vote is great. The 700 mile fence is too short. We have a border about three times that long with Mexico. Why not run it along the full border. Also we could model it after the one used in Israel. They know how to stop terrorists and anyone trying to get into their country. I still don't know why some people are against controlling immigration. I'll bet it has something to do with money.

Steps in the right direction...Senate went for the amnesty concept, House has been enforcement all the way. It's going to be interesting, to see how it all comes down, long-term, time will tell whether they're sincere about it, and how effective the legislation will be, whatever DOES get passed.

Illegal immigration's not an easy issue. There's a lot of aspects and factors, and the main part of the people that did come to our country without doing all the right things are probably fairly decent folks. Comma. Fairly decent folks times the 150 million or so that would walk in if we kept the border wide open would still be a problem, even if they never so much as stepped on a crack in the sidewalk.

The world's population keeps climbing, 6.6 billion people, last count. Other countries economies haven't done as well as ours,
and they've had a lot of kids, kids they now can't feed nor educate. What would we do, in their shoes? Possibly something similar, most likely we'd be seeking the best possible opportunity like hell, come hell or high water. Desperate people in desperate times take desperate measures. It doesn't change the fact that they never had to come up on desperate times to begin with,
but things've happened in other countries, such as social unrest,
general lack of their government to do anything about their economy, things like that, that make it a royal bear to get ahead, and in some cases, impossible, for all intents and purposes.
Now, the combination of loose borders plus other peoples' misfortune times 5.1 billion growth rate in 100 years has put half the world knocking at our door...insistently. VERY insistently.
You weren't going to eat that, were you? ........

I don't really get the photo ID thing. I mean there are record low turnouts by American voters during elections as is. Did I miss something or have non citizens been voting en mass?

I still think the fence thing is just a waste of a lot of taxpayers money. Anyway it seems with all the tunnels they keep finding whats the point? Inanimate objects do not deter people, actual people manning the borders do.

Watch out for what comes out of that Senate House Conference. You can kiss voter Photo ID goodbye neither side wants that. All they want is bogus publicity about what they worked so hard to do. Halliburton might be positioning equipment to build useless fence this very minute.

big deal is anyone really impressed by that? its a joke what year are we in 2006 and were really barely dealing with this. immigration is a failed issue. the people that are here are here and heads up the majority of them are not even from the south they are people from all over the world that are here on expired visas by continually attempting to disenfranchise a hard working segment of this population will have a very big price to pay down the road bush knows it congress knows the senate knows it. this issue is even greater than most people realize. our best bet is to seal up the border the people that are here welcome them in as americans get stricter on who allow in this country and and enforce before people of other nationalities start families here the last thing we want to do is start the formula for the creation of home grown terrorist desperate and resentfull people do desperate and resentful things

a very good small first step...we must continue to email or phone Daily, if possible) our representatives, senators & bush so they don't "forget" that most Americans want these criminals out of our country! It doesn't matter if you notify a member of congress not from your state - tell them all & tell them often....
No Amnesty (by any name)
Attrition thru Local, State & Federal Enforcement
Repeal the 14th Amendment

Finally some sanity. Now if they would require voters to give proof of still living and having only voted once!

A fence and id solve nothing. They just give people a false sense of "security."

The fences won't last long and IDs are still too easy to fake.

Why this country doesn't work to make its infrastructure strong and help other countries do so is beyond me.
