Olive oil may be healthier for you but it has a flavor that is better suited to savory, not sweet, recipes. Also, I don't think it can stand up to the temperature required to bake the cake properly. It has a lower boiling point than other oils and may actually fall apart, again adversely affecting the flavor of the cake. This is also why you seldom see recipes for fried food that use olive oil. Better stick with a neutral tasting oil with a higher smoke or boiling point.

Subsitute margerine and milk for the oil. Olive oil does indeed have a strong flavor that will ruin the cake. Try 2/3 melted butter and 1/3 milk for the missing oil.

I use olive oil for everything EXCEPT baking. Buy a small bottle of vegetable oil and keep it just for cake and brownie mixes. Olive oil burns at a lower temperature and it's flavor is more suited to savory dishes than sweet.

Olive oil has a different taste to it than vegetable oil. It might work, but I couldn't tell you for sure. I would guess that the cake would mix up all right but it might throw the taste off.

Yes, vegetable oil can be substituted for olive oil as long as the recipe calls for regular olive oil. If it calls for extra virgin olive oil then you have to us extra virgin because the taste would be different. In fact, many cooks substitute regular olive oil in place of vegetable oil on a regular basis when sautéing, pan frying, or browning.

Yes you can use olive oil. Substituting one oil for another will rarely make a significant difference in flavor. For everyone who claims using olive oil has terrible results, they are either using rancid oil or using the wrong oil. Salad oil is not cooking oil. The different grades of olive oil have different strengths of flavor and different intended uses. Use the appropriate oil and you will have good results.

You can use olive oil but it will taste a little awkward if you did. I mean, with so many other type of oils out there, why not try soybean oil instead. Since soybean has no flavor to them, that can be a good substitute for your cake instead of vegetable oil and a lot healthier, too.

Olive oil will take away a little of the flavor of the cake.

You can substitute anything that you want into the recipe. You didn't ask if it would taste alright, so the answer to your question is "yes". If you meant "Would a cake recipe using Olive Oil instead of cooking oil still taste the same?" then your answer is a resounding "no".

Sure you can. But don't expect it to taste right. Olive oil has a flavor and it will throw off the flavor of the cake. Plus it has a lower burn temperature.
But be adventurous, give it a try. The worst thing that could happen is to have a crappy tasting, overcooked cake.
