No, burnt is more of a taste than an appearance. Take blackened fish for example, the outside of the fish is black and crusty, but it doesn't taste burned. Burning a cake means that the flavor of the cake is affected, not the appearance. Icing can cover the appearance

no- it does not have to be black. if you cook it too long the sides will start to get hard and turn brown, that is considered burnt.
