I AM SORRY TO SAY BUT THERE IS NO SHORT CUT IN DEALING WITH CHRONIC PAIN. I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH IT FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS MRI'S, CT SCANS, PHYSICAL THERAPY - NOT TO MENTION 49 EPID. STEROID INJECTIONS OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS. THE ONLY RELIEF THAT I HAVE HAD HAS BEEN THE "RIGHT" COMBINATION OF MEDICATION. FIRST YOU MUST IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM BEFORE YOU CAN TREAT IT AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU WANT TO SKIP THAT PART AND GO DIRECTLY TO TREATMENT. WHEN IT COMES TO DISC HERNIATIONS AND CHRONIC BACK PAIN MY BEST TREATMENT HAS COME FROM A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION OVER THE COURSE OF TIME. YOU MUST EXERCISE (WITH PHYSICIAN OK) AND FIND THE RIGHT COURSE OF MEDICATION FOR CHRONIC PAIN. A CHRONIC PAIN FACILITY IS GREAT FOR THIS. GOOD LUCK AND DON'T GIVE UP!!

for my personal sciatic pain, which i had a terrible episode a couple of months ago... advil 800 mg (4 x 200 mg tablets) and rest and ice on lower back and pain relief cream....i know how awful but time is the only thing that will make it go away...
The good news for patients is that sciatica usually will get better on its own, and the healing process usually only takes a few days or weeks. Overall, the vast majority of episodes of sciatica pain heal on their own within a six to twelve week time span. However, occasional flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain may be an indication of a condition that should be managed so that it does not get worse over time. For most, readily available pain management techniques and regular exercise will go a long way to remedying the situation. For others, when the pain is severe or does not get better on its own, a more structured pain management program (including specific physical therapy and exercise), and possibly surgery, may offer the best approach to finding pain relief and preventing or minimizing future flare-ups of sciatica.
Conservative care for sciatica
During an episode of sciatica, there are a number of conservative care (non-surgical) options available to help alleviate the sciatic pain and discomfort.
Heat/ice for sciatica
For acute sciatica pain, heat and/or ice packs are most readily available and can help alleviate the pain, especially in the acute phase. Usually ice or heat is applied for approximately 20 minutes, and repeated every two hours. Most people use ice first, but some people find more relief with heat. The two may be alternated to help with sciatica pain relief.
Medications for sciatica
Over-the-counter or prescription medications may also be helpful in relieving sciatica. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral steroids can be helpful in reducing the inflammation and pain associated with sciatica.

Check here a very effective Sciatica Natural Treatment ( http://cure-sciatica.info )
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

"I don't have the time to get MRI's, CT scans, and all that stuff."
Then I guess you're screwed. Without knowing what is causing the sciatic nerve to radiate pain, how can you expect to know how to fix it?
You'd better make time, or you could end up out of work for several months while you recoup from surgery, like I had to. Only in my case the moronic Orhtopedist misdiagnosed me and then tried to lie about it. Luckily I got smart and saw a neurosurgeon who fixed me up.

The pain you are describing sounds like sciatica ("sye-AT-tic-uh"), which is caused by compressed nerves in the back. It could be the result of a bulging disc, spinal stenosis, arthritis or something else. Sometimes physical therapy and exercise can ease the pain. Cortisone injections can bring tremendous relief for some conditions. Sometimes it requires back surgery, but that's a last resort.

This isn't the answer you asked for, but sometimes you have to take care of yourself first, even if life is crazy-busy.
You don't mention not having the financial or insurance resources to get this taken care of, so I'm presuming time is your prime issue. Constant, excruciating pain can actually take years off your life, cause severe depression, and cause other problems as your body compensates by moving in ways that are not natural, oftentimes compounding the original problem to many times worse than what it was.
I've had MRIs, CT scans and lots of related tests and they really don't take much time. If you get to the source of the problem soon enough, even recouperation time isn't much.
When I was a small child, Mrs. Walker lived next door to us. She had a lot of pain in her "chest." She and my mother were good friends and it worried my mother sick and made her mad at Mrs. Walker because she "didn't have time" and she was "too necessary at work to take time off" to go find out what was causing the pain. I remember, too, how sad her children were when she died of breast cancer that could, even in the '60's, have been taken care of had she just gone to the doctor.
I don't know if you have children or not, a husband or not, a S/O or not, but without doubt you have people that love you very much and, to them, you are very much worth the time. Please get the tests done and over with and get things fixed ~ then you can "run" as fast through life as you want to! =)
