New York City has 5 boroughs, I guess you want to stay in Manhattan, right? Get ready.
You guess few things right. Food is not cheap, I mean nothing is cheap. McDonald's value meal average $5.50, movie $10. Sharing an apartment with strangers, your share is around $800-$1000 per month.
People are rude, but you don't deal with them.
You'll run into celebrities in Soho or Village areas. Usually they are very low profile cos they don't want to be recognized. On 57th Street, but those are high end shops, you don't want to stay there for too long.
Tip: For cheap grocery, go to Chinatown (lower Manhattan), or other boroughs.
Robbery: you just have to be careful, it's not true that it happens every hour. You have to be alert and keep your own belongings.
Commute: Do not try to own a car. Take subway, the 30-day unlimited metro card is the best deal and you get free transfer for buses. Manhattan is easy to navigate, somehow you can walk. Taxi is expensive. From JFK to Manhattan is around $45 - $50.
Museums: MOMA is free every Friday after 5pm. Metropolitan Museum of Art is upon you donation, like $1. Others cost a lot.
Broadway shows: Get the same day tickets is always half price or lesser, but your luck will lead you to whatever you catch.
Make friends: in school is easier, join some clubs or whatever meetings. If you are friendly, you'll make many friends.
Good luck and welcome to NYC!

I was born here and grew up here, left for college and now I am back in NYC, living on my own this time.
No, people don't get robbed on the street all the time. Tourists seem to get robbed all the time because they are looking up at the buildings and not watching their bags. You just have to remember to always be alert, always assume everything is a scam (even if it is not), and make sure you are aware of your surroundings and you should be fine.
I wouldn't say that we are rude, but we are in a rush, which to outsiders can seem as rudeness. There's not need to say, "sorry I bumped into you" when you are too busy running to where you have to go. Just think of it this way. If you were at a very crowded concert where you are constantly bumping into people you wouldn't apologize every single time because it's accepted that you will bump into some people in a crowd, it is just a given. Well, we just think it's a given that you'll pass by someone and jostle their bags or bump them by accident, so it's just something that happens anyways.
I have seem celebrities on occasion, but I wouldn't say that I see them walking around all the time.
I don't know how easy it is to meet people because the only people I know here are people that I grew up with.
Food is REALLY cheap! You can get FANTASTIC food here for relatively little money. Slice of AWESOME NY pizza: $1.50, 2 hot dogs with a papaya drink: $2.75, a bagel with melted meunster cheese and tomato: $1.75... so on. Besides snack foods, there are also full-meals you can get on the cheap. Tons of street food (indian, middle eastern, polish, italian, chinese). Many other places to eat are cheap as well. I've found that shopping at the little grocer or at fruit stands (for sure) is cheaper and better than the bigger grocery stores sometimes. You should also figure out when certain places are having deals and specials... but you'll catch on to that type of thing after you move here.
Definitely you will find that you have little privacy here and little personal space. That doesn't bother me since I grew up with it, but I can imagine it might be unsettling to someone who values their "alone time".
Have a good time!

Despite our seemingly cold attutude we will help you if you need it . New York is also the safest big city in the country but the crime rates really depend on the area your in. People are always connecting but are wary of strangers at first. We have the same food here as anywhere else but restaurants will cost more. It's a great city with a great mix of people. Mass transit is easy to use and safe as long as your aware (you can use taxi but students usally live on the cheap).

I was born and raised in New York City and still live here. It's great here and people here are not rude. We mind our own business. You should do the same. Then there won't be any problems. If you respect us, we respect you back and as for the robbery, I have never been robbed.

Yes, they're rude. But that doesn't mean that you have to be. Fight back with kindness and respect, wherever possible (and with a martial art when it's not possilbe)!
