I grew up in apple orchard and apple juice is made from #1 apples like the ones you buy in the stores,then there are the #2 apples, these are the ones that have some scar marks on them which are good for jellies, then there are #3 apples which are referred to as cider apples. Those are the ones we would throw away at home but they are used at orchards for making apple cider. Even though rotten apples are used, apple cider is still good.

(1) There is no difference at all. (Source: large midwestern bottler.) Uncle Sam confirms that there is no legal distinction. In other words, it is all marketing booshwa. But see below.
(2) The store-bought stuff is juice, the homemade stuff is cider. (Source: East Coast conglomerate; also, the old edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.) The product you buy from roadside stands usually has not been pasteurized. Consequently, it ferments over time, giving it a mildly alcoholic kick. What you buy in the store, in contrast, is pasteurized soon after crushing, preventing fermentation and resulting in a pleasant but kickless taste. The manufacturers call their product cider in the fall for marketing purposes.
(3) Cider is made from apples that are picked early. (Source: Washington State outfit that claims to be the country's largest maker of juice and cider.) Early-harvest apples supposedly have higher acid and lower sugar content, producing a drink with a tangier taste. Thus true cider remains cider after processing because pasteurization doesn't affect the acid/sugar content

In the UK:
Apple juice is just that, the juice derived by crushing apples. It can be natural, with pulp still in it , or filtered so that it is clear.
Cider has been allowed to ferment i.e. part of the natural sugars have been turned into alcohol by the action of yeasts. Typically they will be about 4 to 6 percent strength, about the same as most beers. Again, they can be naturally cloudy (known in the UK as scrumpy cider) or filtered to be clear.

People have it wrong. MOST cider is not pasteurized, it's really the juice of the apple, like what you'd get it you tried it at home. Apple juice is what gets pasteurized, filtered and diluted.

Cider = fermented & alcoholic
Juice = Juice
At least that's the difference in the UK.
Diffferent areas of the US seem to disagree

Apple juice sometimes has more fiber and pulp.
Apple cider is filtered so it is more liquid.
Kind of like jam and jelly.
