A friend of mine keeps threating to overdose on something, and I really want to "scare" her away from it, has anyone here tried it? what happened to you? what did you do it on? She's going to therapy now, but she's having a hard time at the moment.

i took an overdose of tylenol three's and some other pills..... (but i didn't unfortunately take enough to kill me... i mean i'm glad about it now...but at the time i was really pissed and the doctor's didn't think i was serious about suicide)...

anyway...my husband came home early....and i was crying and upset...and he asked what is wrong and i said that i took a lot of pills.. (something like 19...apparently that is way too few..but i used to take things very literally and would worry about oding if i took three tylenol instead of the two that was indicated...lol)

so they made me go to the hospital and they pumped my stomach with charcoal... it was a nightmare...having that tube shoved down my throat.... and the charcoal tasted bad when i threw it up..and i had charcoal diarrhea for a few days too.....

i would never try pills again i don't think.....

I have never had a personal experience with it, but I have seen the outcome of people who have overdosed and not died. One man, in particular....good looking man at that...just wanders the streets, has no permanent place to live....goes to charity organisations for food and clothing...has no goals, has no love in his life, he just exists. You cannot have a conversation with him because he doesnt understand a word you say and will look up into the clouds. His brain is gone...he is a walking vegetable. He is 22 years old. He isnt even waiting to die because he has no conception about death or life....he is a walking space cadet.

Another young girl overdosed and was put in hospital...she recovered...treid to overdose again....Now she is in hospital permanently, doesnt have any sense of reality. She doesnt know what is going on around her. The nursing staff feed her, shower her. She is 32 years old and wears a nappy because she cannot control her bodily functions. She has no teeth because the drugs destroyed them. She has massive lesions on her face from drug use. In short she is, well I cannot say the walking dead because she doesnt walk. The nursing staff have to roll her and move her around so she doesnt get bed sores...so she may as well be dead...she has no life. They are only 2 of the many people I have come into contact with in the 25 years of working with youth who have drug/alcohol related problems. For some people death would be the better alternative than to suffer irreversible brain damage and to end up a vegetable.

I tried it when I was a teenager and let me tell you, it was a horrible experience. I took all kind of cold medications that were in the house and started feeling so horrible with headache and nausea that I called 911 myself. An ambulance came and I can remember them slapping my face all the way to the hospital to make sure I stayed awake. When I got to the hospital they put this huge tube down my throat and pumped charcoal in my stomach to make me throw up. It was a horrible and frightning thing. I threw up black charcoal all night. Let me tell you, I learned my lesson and I hope your friend never has to go through that. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

The results depend on what medication she overdoses on. In most cases it will not kill her. Her stomach will be pumped when she gets to the hospital. I have never experienced that, but I hear its not too pleasant. She might damage her liver and need dialisys. She could tear a hole in her stomach requiring surgery to repair. If she does actually die from overdosing, it will be a long and painful death.

THATS WHEN I LEARNED LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DO STUPID THINGS LIKE THAT. EVERYONE HAS THERE OWN TIME TO LIVE, SO LIVE IT UP
