Dogs are very sociable animals and like to live in "packs" (even though it would be just you and him he would consider you his leader). I therefore would not recommend getting a dog at all as it would be very unfair for it to be left alone, it would get very distressed and probably paw at your doors/furniture and howl for hours on end. If you really must get a dog why not hire a dog walker to take it out every day as well as taking it out yourself when you get home of course? I have cats and even though I give them loads of love and attention when I'm at work they do as they please and are very happy. Don't be hasty - think of the animal's feelings first although I'm sure you're a very caring person.

I love dogs but as a shift worker I thought a cat was a better pet for me and love Fudge to bits! He is a big lump of a cat and likes to do his own thing, a dog would need far more attention than you can really give working long shifts.

A virtual dog from the Internet or a stuffed toy, Dogs are living things that need company, attention and dedication and should not be left alone for more than 4 hours maximum. How would you like to be locked up alone for long periods with no access to a loo and no entertainment and stimulation and not knowing if any one would in fact return home at all?

unless you can get two dogs don't get any, dogs need to have company, remember they are pack animals. You'd be better with a cat because they are more independant and enjoy doing their thing. If you do get a dog then see if there would be someone willing to doggie sit when you are at work. But I'd go with the cat.

Sorry but if it is going to be left on its own then don't bother at all. Dogs are social animals and need lots of company and stimulation. A couple of good walks everyday and access to outside space whenever it wants. Lots of people just shut the dog indoors or in one room all day - I don't think this is fair.

i would recommend not getting a dog at the moment. Dogs don't like to be left on their own and its cruel. Dogs tha are left on thir own a lot of te time may try to run away also. Its not fair. I would wait for a more appropriate time.

Dogs are very caring pets so if you was to do shift work i would not recommend a dog, as they get very lonley. It would be best to get a pet that can cope better in these situations like a reptile, chinchillas

To be honest with you, a dog needs alot of time and attention, so if you do not have that time or attention to devote, I would recommend not getting a dog, it would not be fair.
Maybe an indoor cat would work better for you, they are more independent, they have a litter pan, so they don't require regular walks.
Good Luck

I would recommend a rat terrier, they are small dogs, make great watch dogs - do not need as much exercise as other dogs. Plus they are very loving and way less hyper than a Jack Russell. I find using a laser light can do as much exercising as taking them outside and if you train them early not to dig you don't have that problem later in life. Plus they are easy to train and rather intelligent.

don't get a dog if you're going to have to leave at home on it's own a lot, cos when it rips up your house out of boredem it will get shouted at and it's not the dogs fault. i would wait until there is someone with it for most of the day. you could get a cat? after you've house trained them they own you and not the other way round! they tend to do what they want when they want and come and go as they please. dogs are very demanding creatures who need constant attention (a bit like your average bloke!!!!)
cat xx
