In short - the US pressured the Greek junta to pressure the Greek Cypriots to reclaim land from the Turkish Cypriots. Turkey sent soldiers to invade Northern Cypriots and drove out over 200,000 residents from their homes. The Greek Cypriots lost power, the UN established a Green Line and the Greek junta was overthrown by the King. In 1975, Greece became a republic when voters overwhelmingly wanted a democracy rather than a monarchy. In 1983, no one recognized Turkey's invasion of Northern Cyprus - which remains to this day. Cyprus is in the EU, but only the Greek half is a full member. There are plans in the works to unify the 2 Cyprus' but only when sticky things like right of return are negotiated and the like.

Because Cyprus wanted union with Greece and Turkey was afraid that the turkish cypriots would be dispossessed.
