I have a case pending with Social Security. I applied for disability because I am bipolar and have gone thru 4 jobs in less than a year. If I am approved will my 13 year old son receive benefits?

MAYBE! There are two basic disability programs: SSI and SSDI. SSI is need based and benefits are only paid to the disabled individual.

SSDI usually, but not always, pays benefits to dependents. You have to have a high enough PIA (that's your benefit amount) in order to have a higher MFB (maximum family benefit).
The general rule of thumb is with one dependent, MOST claimants chldren will receive a check equal to 50% of the parent's check but the parent will be the representative payee and responsible for spending that child's check ON THE CHILD (housing, clothing, food....)

Yes,I received 50% of my check as a dependent benefit for my son while he was a minor.Hopefully you put on your initial application that you have a dependent so they are aware of it.

When my dad got SSD, he did get checks for me and my sister, but they were about 25% of what he got. He didn't have to give them to us or anything, they were just used for expenses associated with raising children.
